How does insulting your own culture help us here ? "Crab mentality" as it is popularly known, exists in numerous cultures across the world. Go google for the term and you will know.

It reminds me this story every time I visit IV.

Workers working with an export company which use to ship chickens from all over the world to US/Europe, were packing chickens from some Indian port. Each box was having some 50-70 chickens in it .

After loading them in, they were about to cover these boxes with the tops. The leader shouts to workers: " No need to put the tops. They wouldn't go any where "

Surprised with this order, one worker asks the leader 'Why'. The leader says : " These are Indian chickens. IF one tries to escape, other will pull its leg."

With my very best wishes to those of you waiting for your GC, this thread is created for the lucky among us who received it recently. I am putting together a list of things to do, and not do, to maintain our freshly minted PR status, which should also help during future citizenship application. The list is mostly about little things that others have learned from experience (and I am learning from their experience, by reading in immigration-related forums such as IV). The more obvious things that can be found for example in USCIS handbook (http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/M-618.pdf) are not included here. Below is a snapshot of what I have gleaned from Internet so far, and please add your own input(s):

LIST of DO's :

1. Carry the original PR card on your person at all times (e.g. in your wallet), keep photocopies in different places, and also store A# on your computers. Note: This is a contentious issue (do a google on "carry green card" and see for yourself), despite being required by law (http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=fe17e6b0eb13d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCR D&vgnextchannel=4f719c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1 RCRD). Some people are naturally worried about losing wallet and the eventual hassle of replacing the lost card (http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=b3f7ab0a43b5d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCR D&vgnextchannel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1 RCRD), whereas others, including me, prefer to follow the law, in case I am suddenly asked to produce evidence of my legal status (e.g. in some border states, or unforeseen events, such as being involved in an out-of-state car accident where showing my DL might just not be enough). Failure to comply may result in, at best a fine, and at worst detention for breaking a law. (See comments by InTheMoment below for additional perspectives.)

2. Retain all original copies of USCIS documents related to your legal status during the entire period of stay in USA, and shred all photocopies (except when you have a photocopy but not its original).

3. Retain all employment-related documents, particularly original copies of appointment letters.

4. Retain copies of all tax return forms from the year of your first entry, or (at least) previous 10 years (you can request IRS (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf), or your professional tax preparer, for any missing copy).

5. Maintain a detailed log of USA exit/entry, including dates, POE and countries traveled, beginning with the day of first entry.

6. Maintain a detailed list of all legal troubles, including minor traffic infractions such as speeding violations (ignore parking violations, because they do not constitute legal "detention"), going as far back as possible. Keep copies of all relevant court papers, traffic tickets, proof of any payment (e.g. scanned copies of personal checks used, credit card statements), and so on.

7. Update your social security card (http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html) to remove any restrictive clause about work authorization printed on it. Note: AFAIK, the procedure changes nothing as far as your privileges go, and some of you may not even have such a clause on your SS card (I don't have it either).

8. Return your I-94 cards to POE on your next trip outside USA, to "close the open files" on your past travels (I do not know what it means though). Note: AFAIK, this is also not required, and besides, you should have the chance to do this while applying for citizenship.

9. Renew DL to get rid of the annoying "Temporary" word (in case you are in one of those states that do this).

10. Update your status with your employer by filing new I-9 form (thanks to InTheMoment for this point).

11. Continue to notify USCIS (http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=c1a94154d7b3d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCR D) about change of address within 10 days of moving, as before (thanks to seahawks for this point).

12. Keep a list of current and past residential addresses, including dates of stay. Retain all leases/ownership documents.

13. Remember the basics: Initiate your GC/passport renewal process at least 6 months before expiry/Intl travel (Thanks to pappu for this point.)

14. And yes, move the family first commitment at the top of your must-do list, now that you have less worry about re-entry, and make that long-delayed trip home to see your old folks one more time. (I am visiting my 83-yr old Dad, who still has more hair than I do, and less gray too, in June.)

LIST of DONOT's :

1. Do not sign up for voter registration card. In particular, never vote in national/state/local elections that are open only to citizens, because this is also a law (http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=fe17e6b0eb13d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCR D&vgnextchannel=4f719c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1 RCRD). Even an accidental mistake (e.g. voting out of ignorance) is a serious offense, which would not only derail your future citizenship plan, but may even result in deportation.

2. Do not develop a pattern of frequent and/or long absences from USA, unless you have taken prior permission for valid reasons (e.g., studying abroad, medical emergencies etc). Otherwise you may face trouble at POE on your next re-entry attempt, because DHS has become stricter in recent times about possible misuse of PR status, and POE folks are now trained to spot such patterns.

3. Do not switch job soon after getting GC. This is one of the most discussed, but least understood, issues because no one seems to agree on "how soon is soon". The rule of thumb appears to be "6 months", and a safer bet is "1 year" (here is a thread (http://forums.immigration.com/showthread.php?t=154533) on another forum). This again relates to USCIS being increasingly sensitive to possible misuse of PR status, and this question will come up during your citizenship application process. (But, as InTheMoment points out below, the issue becomes moot if you invoke AC21.)

4. Those of us who self-sponsored our GC via NIW or EB1A route are not bound by such employer-employee commitment, but you should continue working in "similar areas of expertise" that you claimed in your NIW/EB1A petition, and preferably on a longer time scale.

[This is an evolving list thanks to valuable inputs from folks here and elsewhere, so keep checking back.]

Cheers,
Stuck(no more)InTheMuck

Good post I like it and I probably may follow most of these eventually but, if I think about it, it seems to me lot of stress. Maintaining records from past ten (GC)/fifteen (Citizenship) years is certainly a stressful activity. Except education certificates I never cared for anything in my home country. In spite of taking care of all this, if you get involved in an unfortunate event everything GC/Citizenship goes into vain and back to square one.

I am not trying to discourage or depress any one. Its just a thought.

I am a registered member not contributing financially so far. I beliefs are as fake as "reverse brain drain". I am neither fake nor anti immigrant. I am not a citizen of the USA nor a permanent member to be anti immigrant. But I always like to try and see if I can walk a mile in their shoes before making tall claims about anything. I beleive the USA govt will really stop the reverse brain drain if it is that big an issue for them without even we trying to tell them.

There is so much lineup for GC's in the US answers your question on brain-drain. When someone talks of reverse brain-drain, that just means that there are some people who are not trying to stay back here, or are returning back if it does not work out quickly. It does not mean that no one is trying to migrate to the US, and there are long lines for migration from US to China/India etc. Facts speak for itself. What you say might happen in 50 yrs, but that is not the case today.

One of my friends(who was in my company earlier) got his old H1 case reopened. He is not that worried as he already has left the employer and joined someone else.
This is little strange as USCIS is digging the dead.

I am keeping a close eye on my case which got approved in 03/2005 and has LUD of 08/2006. Seems like they opened the case earlier but I didnt notice it.

You mentioned that your case got approved in 03/2005 and has an LUD of 08/2006....Thats like an year ago....Since you did'nt notice it ...what does the status say now ...Is it still pending....or approved or ????

I posted this before, but got nowhere (read: did not get the answer I hoped for), hopefully people with little bit more legalese can answer on this discrepancy.

According to 8usc 1153 (b)(3)A : "Visas shall be made available, in a number not to exceed 28.6 percent of such worldwide level, plus any visas not required for the classes specified in paragraphs (1) and (2), to the following classes of aliens who are not described in paragraph (2)".

Which means that EB3 should be getting the unused visa numbers from EB1 at around the same time as EB2, and not only if EB2 also does not need the numbers.

Is the reading that EB2 and EB3 should concurrently share the number on the right track? And if so, is USCIS rolling over the numbers in the right manner?

If EB3 were to get rolled over numbers only after EB2 is satisfied consuming EB1, the language would have been similarly worded as the last part of 1153(b)(3)A "... to the following classes of aliens who are not described in paragraph (2)".

Feb 2003!

I feel this is too small a specimen to predict anything but so far about 25% are Jun 2003 or older...

Below is purely my speculation!

Assuming there are 400k applications pending (may be a bad assumption) > so about 100k with PD's Jun 2003 or less...

10k per year allotted so 10 years to reach June 2003

I hope my calcs are wrong! God Bless us!

I'm not writing this in my capacity as a core member, but just as a regular individual. Aman has selflessly worked towards EB immigration reform, at the cost of precious personal time with family, as well as taking vacation time in order to make the numerous trips to Washington DC. He has not asked for reimbursement for expenses incurred during numerous previous trips to DC.

The skilled professional community, those who are members of IV, and those aren't yet, must be extremely grateful to Aman for this selfless act.

He may not like me stating this, but this is true.

Several volunteers have spent hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets without disturbing IV funds for press releases, travel and so on.

One important thing: Money is an enabler for several things including operating expenses, infrastructure mobilization, etc., However, at the end of the day, solidarity and efforts count.

While IV will continue to require funds, members are encouraged to assist in other non-monetary ways as well. That would be even more powerful information for us when we get in touch with policy influencers. A recent example was the stories requested by Cong. Loefgren's office, for which we had to prepare several stories, requring us to get in touch with you all. Completed information will help easen this process

a) Please discard your cloaks of anonymity and complete your profiles with your information. That's the first step.
b) The next step is to increase awareness among the community, law makers and influencers.
c) Get more members to enroll.
d) Assist in non-monetary ways: How many of you have non-working spouses, friends, et al who can contribute focused time and effort(not money). In other words, volunteer time and effort?

Please write to info@immigrationvoice.org
May be that is the reason you took offense when people commented on Bcom thing. An MBA is valuable only if your bachelors degree is valuable. Many people have this wrong notion that it does not matter what you have in your bachelors, if you get an MBA everything is all set. QUOTE]

Hey GG - I did not take offense to your sentiments on B Com. What pissed people off, was your tone and disgust at the poor fellow and his qualifications, especially when you know little about his ability to carry out his job, or his background. In school, or on line -- he earned those degrees. Maybe he didn't have the financial resources to attend the best schools (I dont know what is IGNOU). His employer has retained him, so perhaps he is good at what he does. He left his home, his family and traveled to some foreign shore to earn a living, not rob a bank. Show some respect. Anyway apologies for anything harsh I have said. Peace.

Not true...

In the EB base, only 1 GC is counted for all family members. How can it count more than one if it is a derivative of an employment visa? It might count against the Family base even though primary applicant is EB-based. Not the other way around.
U r wrong here my friend. In EB, visa number is counted for each dependent.

GCPA03,

I hope you are not joking here, did you try to port your EB-3 date to some old PD or change from EB-3 to EB-2?

I am surprised how come PD is not current and USCIS denies I-131 based on the grounds that I-485 approved.

Something is definitely wrong here, unless its USCIS system glitch which considers the preadjudicated (pre-approved) cases as approved and then deby subsequent benefits associated with AoS (I-485) pending application.

Very interesting news for the IV community. Keep us posted on the new developments.

I think we should emphasize HR 5882 and write to:

1. The President ASAP
2. Immigration Subcommittee
3. All CHC members

The intention is to bring this bill to the floor this year and make sure it is passed.

I think people with PD 2001, 2002 and 2003 should definitely write as they have a better case than the 2006 or 2007 filers.

This is our last opportunity this year to let go.

I am not sure under what BILL they have a provision to remove US degree holders from actual Visa Numbers...but, we should also keep fighting for that because this would have two fold benefits:

1. All US degree holders will be benefited.
2. These US degree holder Numbers can be used by Non-US degree holders.

As everyone knows, most of the students will be unmarried when they enter the country for there degrees...and apply for GC after getting married....so, definitely if these numbers get eliminated from the actual visa numbers we would have double the numbers available for non-us degree holders...what do you guys think..????????

Did it occur to anyone that we are only talking about compensating Aman the $64k he spent already. Imagine if he had made use of that $64k as an investment(let us say a safe investment with minimum returns) of that amount it should have exceeded that $64k value by now.

The least we can do at this moment is to immediately refund Aman and other core team members the amount they have spent towards the administrative costs of IV. Pappu / Logic Life / Other core team members, please let us know what kind of legal/administrative action is required to get this done.

We will immediately start a funding drive towards filling in this shortage from the total IV funds. IMHO on the longer run the smaller funds ($10, $20 etc) should not be neglected.

Let us figure out the required amount and have a new thread started about this. This settlement should be treated with high priority before any other funding drive. Pledging my $200 towards this.

Yes this is not a typo. This is true. Aman has made more financial sacrifices and time sacrifices than anyone else. Not a single penny has been reimbursed to him for his trips to DC, food and stay in DC or car rental in DC. He even risked his job and went to DC on unpaid leave at critical times because lobbying was important for getting our work done. We in the core team know this and when we see the kind of contributions we get from members, we feel disappointed that our efforts are not valued. When we started the $20 contributions people felt $20 was too high and wanted $10 per month or less. The kind of work and effort that is needed to push a single provision is phenomenal and needs lot of capital. The more the better. Sometimes reading posts that say IV core is selfish also disappoints us. People do not know the effort that goes in getting anything done. This website is simply a tool for us to communicate to everyone. The big effort is the lobbying work. We hope the Buisnessweek article helps people realize our hard work and people value it by contributing to it and helping us in all action items.
There can be several things that we want to discuss and share. But isn't this platform supposed to be for immigration? If we start discussing about Best phone cards, airtickets to india, jokes, unrelated politics etc., we will soon loose the purpose of this website and forum.

If many senators, attorneys, other aides visit this website and can find all this unrelated posts, we loose the seriousness and focus we would like to address.

Maybe core team can evaluate and see if they want to create a special section for general discussion that does not show on the front page. Just a suggestion.

Nicely said.
Don't know if it was Roman or greek, but they kept on diluting their currency (gold coins) with copper to support their spending and populist schemes. They kept on diluting to the extent that even India stopped exporting spices becuase their coins were not worth as much as they use to once upon a time.
This is what is happening to dollar.

America is loosing their grips pn global financial system. Even though it will be remembered as the founder of free maket, it has rushed too fast and forced other countries to open up their financial system. HOwever, three essential ingedients of free market theory have not been handled well.
Price discovey, Capital allocation and Flow of liquidity.

We are at a point, where all countries can reject free market as a failed attempt or pick it up from here and strengthen it going foward. Regulation is a must or else we will hit the bump again in future.

Without a proper trading system and regulator price discovey is vey hard and bubbles keep occuring.
This is vey true in case of real estate poperties. There are many localities in Hyderabad where propeties have not been priced appropriately.
In a matter of 1 year, property prices in some localities have gone up multi fold just because of 1 or 2 transactions by desparate buyers.

There is no price differential between 100 sq yards propety or 1000 sq yards property on a per sq yard price basis.
ROE is far greater on investments made on proportionate basis on 1000 sq yard plot compared to 100 sq yard plot. Without regards fo town planning, return on investments every piece of land was priced with the same yard stick.

I think it is best to follow the quotes below
"When eveybody is buying, something is definitely wrong."
"When everybody is selling, again something is wrong".

I don't know much about buying house/property in India. Maybe you want to have a close family member keep an eye on your property otherwise a land graber/local gunda in the area may take possession of your property while you are here/away.

But I find some of the discussion in this thread extremely intriguing. There were specific conditions in 1930s, 1960s, 1990s that caused recovery in those times. Leadership & American generation were ready to sacrifice and do hard work. Contrary to the hard work done during those times, large percentage of the current population is indifferent and does not care to know about the current crisis, not knowing the gravity of the situation. Majority of the population was, still is, opposed to $700 billion bailout/rescue not knowing what is going on. The ups and downs in the stock market is just the beginning. Coming year is going to be very tough, specially on folks are in the situation that require them to visit this forum every now and then.

Every great and prosperous nation is just one generation away from losing its greatness. History teaches us that Great nations lost their greatness/cease to exist because the larger populations ignored the times of crisis. Most people say that America has always come out of crisis in the past and just like those times, America will again come out of the current crisis. That's what everybody expect and wants to see happen, as if there will be a miracle and everything will get fixed. Everybody including media/leadership are taking things for granted, as if things will turn around by itself just because things have turned around in the past. But this apathy is very dangerous. Here is why - we can say with fair bit of certainty that Romans must have also said during their time of crisis that things will be fine, they have always gotten fine because we are the Romans, the empire of Gods, or whatever. Likewise, this time around, media/leaders are guided by similar rhetoric. I find this behavior very dangerous. In 1930s/60s/90s there was able leadership and American generations during those times were ready to do their share. It doesn't appear such this time, atleast not right now. Maybe we have sometime to come out of the crisis and things will change in the near future. But without change in the direction, things don't look very good right now.

Rome was not built in one day and it did not perish in one day. If leadership and population continue to ignore the gravity of the crisis, there is only one possible outcome.

The positive aspect this time around is, due to globalization, other nations have stake in American economy and are willing to come to the rescue. Even nations like China and Russia are willing to step-up. This would have been unthinkable in an un-globalized world. But other nations can only do so much. Ultimately, the larger population in America will have to step up, and that includes us, there is no other way. Now G-7 is working together to come up with a comprehensive plan. A lot of people beat down on globalization, but till now it is working as was designed, which is good, and other friendlier/unfriendlier nations are willing to step-up.

Another foreseeable opportunity to fight the current situation is, world energy crisis. America can use the world energy crisis to turn things around, not necessarily subscribing to ideas from businessmen like T Bone Pickens/natural gas to promote their business and blah bhah blah, but something else, which makes America - a leader to solve the energy requirements of over 6 billion people, when estimated 20% of the world population consumes 95% of the world energy.

I don't know if you should buy property in India or if you should buy gold. But in the grand scheme of things, if I were you, I would hang on to the "cash" very close to my chest. Things are really bad, a lot more than what meets the eye or what is apparent.

.

What really baffles me is the attitude of some members in this forum. They contribute $20 a month (some dont even do that) and want to be treated as a Congressman , with updates & news flashes.

Get real people. First of all your contribution of $20 is nothing compared to what we are up against. We want to push for a change in law in a foreign country, which will impact generations of this country with a small contribution of $20.

The point being: If you cant run the show then shut up and watch it. Give your advise when asked for and dont pretend to own it.
